I started to forget to write the blog too often, so I made a reminder in my calendar, so hopefully I won’t miss another one. By the way, before I forget, here is an awesome website to learn basic cell culture and few other techniques:
This is particularly helpful if you don’t have a lot of experience and you will need to grow cells soon. The lessons are in a game format, so it’s really easy and fun to play.
Ok, now back to my life. During the past two weeks, I had AVIZO training which wasn’t as useful as I hoped it would be. Pretty much all what was covered I already knew, so I am looking forward for the next one. Also I met new undergraduate students that will be doing projects with my supervisors and I will be helping them. I am kind of exited for them to start as I hope to get some useful data from their projects if they are successful. Also I started a proper experiment. Well, it’s still a trial as the fibres that I am using are still beaded but I will get some data. So far, I have done alamar blue and live dead and they don’t look too good. Cells appear to be dying on glass and on my scaffold, however they are very happy on collagen gel. I will do confocal this upcoming Wednesday, so it will be interesting to have a look. Tomorrow I will do day 7 alamar blue and live/dead, so hopefully not all of my cells died over the weekend. By the way, I still don’t have out of hours’ access but I think I am getting closer. I did make a few stupid mistakes on the way, but I think as long as I know what I have done wrong and I know how to improve next time it’s all good.
On a positive note, I have completed my first demonstrator (teaching) session. It was easier that I thought it would be. However, the practical was about pipetting and DNA quantification, so it wasn’t that hard but I thought more will be required from us (demonstrators). I didn’t have to do anything with students just to make sure they are ok, but I prefer to encourage them and test whether they actually understand what they are doing. I hoped they weren’t too annoyed with me. Tomorrow I will do my second session of demonstrating, so fingers crossed that it goes as smoothly as the first one.
Lastly, my friend who left for Singapore for 2 years to finish his PhD (he is doing A start PhD) decided to make a blog, so if you are interested how things work on another side of the planet check out his blog:
